What is EUROCAE ED-14G?

EUROCAE ED-14G is an environmental qualification standard for airborne equipment. It defines test categories and laboratory procedures for climatic, mechanical, electrical and electromagnetic conditions that equipment may experience during aircraft operation.

ED-14G is the European counterpart to RTCA DO-160G. It supports qualification evidence, but it is not a certification regulation and a successful test does not automatically approve an article or aircraft installation. The applicable certification basis, ETSO or TSO, contract and approved compliance plan determine how evidence is accepted.

What this guide covers
Useful external references:
Reference standards:
  • understand the standard’s environmental disciplines;
  • select sections and categories from the intended installation;
  • prepare a controlled qualification test procedure;
  • plan representative mounting, operation and monitoring;
  • build a traceable evidence package.

Is EUROCAE ED-14G certification?

No. ED-14G testing generates environmental qualification evidence; it does not independently certify equipment or approve an aircraft installation. Environmental qualification is one part of a wider evidence chain shared by the equipment manufacturer, installer, design organisation, laboratory and authorised compliance personnel.

Layer Role
Airworthiness and article requirements Define what must be demonstrated and the approval route.
ED-14G / DO-160G Provide environmental categories and laboratory methods.
Qualification or certification plan Identifies the accepted means of compliance and applicable sections.
Environmental Qualification Form Records the tested sections, categories and declarations.
Qualification test procedure Controls the article, setup, sequence, operation, monitoring and acceptance criteria.
Test report Records achieved conditions, results, anomalies and deviations.
Installation assessment Confirms that the evidence represents the intended aircraft installation.
Authorised finding Determines regulatory or programme acceptance.

What tests are covered by EUROCAE ED-14G?

Sections 1–3 establish the common purpose, definitions and test conditions. Sections 4–26 address individual environmental disciplines. Only the sections relevant to the equipment and installation should be selected.

Section Environmental discipline What the programme should establish
4 Temperature and altitude Installation zone, operating and survival temperatures, altitude, decompression, overpressure and cooling needs.
5 Temperature variation Applicable rate category, operating checks, cycling and condensation control.
6 Humidity Moisture exposure, condensation risk, operation and post-exposure checks.
7 Operational shock and crash safety Functional shock, structural loads, mounting integrity and safety criteria.
8 Vibration Aircraft type, installation zone, mounting, axes, profile, duration and monitoring.
9 Explosion proofness Potential explosive atmosphere, ignition risks and applicable specialist route.
10 Waterproofness Expected water exposure, enclosure arrangement and functional assessment.
11 Fluids susceptibility Installation-relevant fluids, application method, temperature, duration and recovery.
12–14 Sand and dust; fungus; salt spray Material, location and exposure relevance, plus sequence constraints.
15 Magnetic effect Permissible influence on aircraft magnetic instruments.
16–19 Power and conducted susceptibility Power architecture, cable configuration, grounding, operating modes and limits.
20–21 RF susceptibility and emissions Category, frequency coverage, cable setup, performance criteria and specialist facilities.
22–23 Lightning effects Installation wiring, shielding, pin injection or cable tests, waveforms and direct-effects applicability.
24–25 Icing and electrostatic discharge Exposure scenario, equipment accessibility and operational response.
26 Fire and flammability Applicable material or equipment objective, category and acceptance route.

Category X indicates that compliance has not been demonstrated for that environmental discipline. It should not be treated as a pass or as evidence that the section is irrelevant.

Does every item need every ED-14G test?

No. The required sections and categories depend on the equipment function, aircraft type, installation zone, mounting arrangement, operating state and approved qualification strategy. Applying every section—or automatically choosing the harshest category—can produce irrelevant evidence and unnecessary programme risk.
