Altitude testing is usually tailored to the product, operating environment and compliance route. Requirements may reference RTCA DO-160 Section 4, MIL-STD-810 low pressure methods, IEC/EN 60068 temperature-altitude tests, UN 38.3 battery transport testing or a customer-defined profile.

The objective is not simply to reach a target altitude. The objective is to generate evidence that is relevant to the equipment, use case and acceptance process. How an altitude test campaign works

  1. Plan: Review the requirement, standards, acceptance criteria, safety considerations and success measures.

  2. Prepare: Confirm product setup, instrumentation, feedthroughs, telemetry and functional checks.

  3. Install and instrument: Position the product, connect agreed channels and verify the setup before chamber closure.

  4. Reduce pressure: Run the agreed altitude or low-pressure profile under controlled conditions.

  5. Condition and dwell: Apply the agreed temperature-altitude profile, including ramp rates, set points and dwell periods.

  6. Functional checks: Power or operate the hardware at defined points when this is part of the agreed plan.

  7. Review and report: Check achieved conditions, observations, plots, photographs and agreed outputs.

Low pressure, temperature and product safety considerations

Altitude testing can affect seals, venting, batteries, enclosures, displays, electronics, fluids, pressure-sensitive materials and powered assemblies. Products should be reviewed for stored energy, pressure differentials, trapped volumes, vent paths and safe operating limits before testing begins.
