Water ingress testing

Water testing is selected to match the second numeral in the required IP code. Depending on the agreed requirement and suitable equipment, the programme may involve water spray or immersion testing.

How an IEC 60529 IP test campaign works

  1. Plan: Review the target IP code, IEC 60529 method, ISO/IEC 17025 reporting needs, acceptance criteria and product configuration.

  2. Prepare: Confirm drawings, seals, gaskets, cable entries, mounting orientation, closures, accessories and functional checks.

  3. Configure: Set the product up in the agreed state so the test reflects the intended installation or supplied condition.

  4. Test: Run the agreed IEC 60529 dust, spray, jet, immersion or high-pressure water exposure for the target rating.

  5. Inspect: Assess dust or water ingress, visual condition and any agreed dielectric or functional checks.

  6. Record: Capture observations, photographs where required and evidence aligned to the specified IP code.

  7. Report: Provide the agreed report or data pack, including ISO/IEC 17025 accredited scope considerations where applicable.

IEC 60529 Testing Terms

IP code
An IP (Ingress Protection) code classifies how effectively an enclosure protects against access to hazardous parts and the ingress of solid foreign objects and water. The first characteristic numeral relates to solids and dust, while the second relates to water ingress.
Ingress protection
Ingress protection testing assesses whether an enclosure can prevent the entry of dust, solid contaminants or water under defined environmental conditions
Pressure depression
Pressure depression may be required for certain dust-test methods and involves creating a pressure difference between the test specimen and the surrounding dust chamber. The need for pressure depression depends on the required method and product configuration
Inspection

Inspection may include internal ingress checks, enclosure condition assessment, functional verification, recorded observations, photographs and any customer-defined acceptance criteria agreed before testing.

IEC 60529 testing generates test evidence against the agreed method and acceptance criteria. It does not, by itself, provide product certification or type approval.
