DEF STAN 00-35 Environmental Testing Standard

Your Test Facilitator. Not simply a test facility.

What is DEF STAN 00-35 Environmental Testing?

DEF STAN 00-35 / DEF STAN 00-035 Environmental Handbook for Defence Materiel is a UK Ministry of Defence standard used to define environmental conditions, test procedures and severities for military equipment and materials. The standard supports environmental qualification programmes intended to demonstrate that defence materiel can survive, operate and remain effective within its expected service environment.
  • Environmental qualification: Provides a structured framework for assessing defence equipment against environmental stresses likely to be encountered during storage, transportation and operational service.
  • Mechanical testing: May include vibration, shock, drop, impact and acoustic environments used to evaluate equipment durability and survivability.
  • Climatic testing: Covers temperature, humidity, altitude, wind-blown sand and wind-blown dust exposures relevant to defence applications.
  • Chemical and biological exposure: Can include corrosion, salt atmospheres, mould growth and fluid contamination assessments.
  • Severity-based approach: Test procedures and environmental severities are selected to reflect the intended service environment of the equipment.
  • Evidence generation: Produces environmental qualification data, observations and reporting to support defence programmes, procurement activities and equipment validation.

Not Sure How to Plan Your DEF STAN 00-35 Test Programme?

Environmental qualification programmes work best when the service environment, equipment configuration, test severities and acceptance criteria are defined before testing begins. Early technical review helps ensure the selected procedures reflect the intended defence application and generate meaningful qualification evidence.  Share your DEF STAN reference, equipment details, drawings, operating requirements and environmental conditions for review. Resonate Testing can assess procedure selection, severity levels, monitoring requirements and reporting expectations before quotation.

  • DEF STAN 00-35 / 00-035 requirement review
  • Mechanical, climatic and chemical test selection
  • Environmental severity and test profile assessment
  • Equipment configuration and mounting review
  • Functional monitoring and inspection planning
  • Customer specification and acceptance criteria review
  • Environmental qualification programme planning and reporting

Climatic Testing

Assesses performance and survivability across demanding atmospheric and climatic conditions.

  • Temperature
  • Humidity
  • Pressure and altitude
  • Wind-blown dust
  • Wind-blown sand

Mechanical Testing

Evaluates equipment against mechanically induced stresses and handling events.

  • Vibration
  • Shock
  • Drop
  • Impact
  • Acoustic analysis

Chemical & biological

Examines degradation caused by biological agents, corrosive environments and service fluids.

  • Mould growth
  • Salt atmospheres
  • Fluid contamination
  • Corrosion

How a DEF STAN 00-35 Test Programme Works

  1. Plan: Review the applicable DEF STAN issue, environmental procedures, severities, operating states, acceptance criteria and reporting requirements.
  2. Prepare: Confirm equipment configuration, drawings, materials, instrumentation, monitoring requirements and mounting arrangements.
  3. Assess Environment: Define the expected storage, transportation and operational environments the equipment will experience in service.
  4. Test: Conduct the agreed mechanical, climatic or chemical environmental exposures using the selected procedures and severities.
  5. Inspect: Complete agreed functional checks, inspections and observations throughout and after testing.
  6. Document: Record achieved conditions, environmental exposures, observations, performance data and any deviations.
  7. Report: Provide the agreed environmental test evidence and qualification reporting aligned to the programme scope.

What to Provide Before Quotation

  • Equipment description, drawings and materials
  • Storage, transport and operational environments
  • Installation, mounting and operating configuration
  • Functional monitoring requirements
  • Required test severities and durations

DEF STAN 00-35 Testing Terms

What is DEF STAN 00-35?
DEF STAN 00-35 is a UK Ministry of Defence environmental standard used to define test procedures and environmental severities for defence materiel.
What is environmental qualification?

Environmental qualification is the process of demonstrating that equipment can survive, operate and remain effective within its intended service environment.

What environmental conditions are covered?

Programmes may include mechanical, climatic, chemical and biological environments such as vibration, shock, temperature, humidity, dust, sand, corrosion and mould growth.

Why are severities important?

Environmental severities determine how demanding the exposure conditions will be and should reflect the intended operating environment of the equipment.

What is defence materiel?

Defence materiel refers to military equipment, systems, components and associated materials that require environmental assessment or qualification.

What evidence is generated?

Environmental testing may produce observations, functional results, achieved-condition records and qualification reports to support defence programmes. [DEF-STAN-0…al-testing | SharePoint]

Why should the standard reference be checked?
The numbering changed from DEF STAN 00-35 to DEF STAN 00-035, so the exact issue, part and procedure should be confirmed before planning a test programme
