Sand and Dust Testing Terms

IP5X

IP5X is a dust-protected rating. Dust ingress is not fully prevented, but any dust that enters must not interfere with satisfactory operation or safety when assessed against the agreed standard.

IP6X

IP6X is a dust-tight rating. It is used where the product must prevent dust ingress under the conditions defined by the applicable IP test method.

IP Code

An IP code classifies protection against solid objects, dust and water. For sand and dust testing, the first digit is most relevant because it describes protection against solid-particle ingress.
