What is IK impact protection testing?

IK testing is a controlled assessment of an enclosure’s resistance to external mechanical impacts. It generates evidence against an agreed IK rating, customer requirement or product standard.

Standards and acceptance criteria

IK testing should be planned against the agreed product standard, customer requirement and acceptance criteria. IEC/EN 62262 is the primary IK classification standard, while IEC 60068-2-75 describes hammer impact methods that may be relevant to the route.

Related standards can also affect the evidence required. IEC 60529 is the IP ingress protection reference, IEC 62208 is relevant to empty enclosures for low-voltage switchgear and controlgear assemblies, and IEC 61587-1 can be relevant for cabinets, racks, subracks and chassis structures.
